Get involved

We are a mutual aid network led by and for nannies, and are always looking for people—childcare worker or otherwise—who are keen to get involved!

The Structure of NSN is that we have 6 working groups where nannies & au pairs can volunteer their time to support their fellow workers. If you are interested in joining one of our working groups, please  fill out our volunteer form or email us at nannysolidaritynetwork@gmail.com or contact us so we can send it to you.

These are:

Welfare Support
Welfare Support is our first port-of-call for the majority of nannies & au pairs who reach out to us for help. This working group works closely with our legal caseworker to provide advice and support to members in need: this includes taking on casework as it comes in, managing phone calls and emails to members seeking help, signposting them to immigration and employment advice and referring them on to our caseworker where appropriate. It is a fast-paced working group but perhaps our most rewarding as it is where we get to work together to deliver justice to fellow workers. In many cases, the Welfare Support working group will refer members on to the Emergency Aid working group if their situation is dire.

Education
Education includes developing in-person and online group workshops, offering to run workshops where appropriate, suggesting/approaching like-minded groups to run workshops for us, and spreading the word about our English classes and first aid courses.

Union Branch
The Union Branch working group is all about working to build campaigns, fight for our working rights, and make some noise! Our union branch is led by nannies and is a space in the NSN where members can take collective action against unfair treatment, pay, and conditions in their workplaces. If you are interested in campaigning, protesting, or striking in your workplace, this is the group for you!

Emergency Aid
The Emergency Aid working group works closely with the Welfare working group to provide immediate, on-the-ground support for workers in need. Emergency Aid is the only working group open to both childcare workers and non-childcare workers as we need as many people as possible supporting this group. Emergency Aid covers supporting au pairs who have been kicked out (this often involves meeting them at their employer's house, helping them pack, making sure they are kept unharmed, and taking them to the hospital if necessary); Distributing hardship fund payments; and organising emergency accommodation for members in need. This group often works sporadically and at short notice: many of our au pair rescues happen late at night. You do not have to attend every time but we hope that by signing up to this working group you will be free to help at least some of the time.

Resources
The Resources working group works to develop written resources (such as flyers, posters, and leaflets) that provide information to nannies & au pairs about their rights, translate written materials into multiple languages, and come up with ideas for new written materials. Currently, this team is working on a Nanny Handbook which is due to be published in English in November 2021.

Community
Our Community working group runs our regular stay & plays in Hyde Park (West London). This involves attending the sessions, helping set up activities for the children and brew the tea/coffee, and promoting our events through flyering or online outreach. We also run online events such as quiz nights, as well as in-person events such as Nannies in the Park—a monthly picnic for members. Additionally, our Community working group is working towards running more stay & plays in different parts of London and the UK—members are always welcome to start their own sessions in their local area and with us providing resources/toys/snacks to make this possible.
