Emergency Aid

We provide hardship grants and emergency housing to nannies & au pairs in, or at imminent risk of, financial hardship or homelessness.

Emergency Aid is where the Nanny Solidarity Network began.

Following the devastation of the first COVID-19 lockdown to the childcare sector, the Nanny Solidarity Network was initially formed as the Childcare Workers' Solidarity Fund - a hardship fund for nannies & au pairs in, or at imminent risk of, destitution.

Nearly 2 years on and we are still providing hardship support to workers across the UK. We provide grants, food, accommodation, clothing - whatever is required! - to members who are in dire need.

The majority of our aid claims are from au pairs who have been kicked out of their employers' homes without notice. Often this is because employers have decided to fire the au pair and are not required to provide a notice period, or - as we often saw during the 2020/21 lockdowns - employers chose to flee to second homes outside London.

In these situations, members from our Emergency Aid working group will either pick the au pair up from their location (if in London) or else send a taxi. We will then generally secure them housing either with one of the hostels we work with in London or in the home of another nanny or au pair.

We have a 'safe house rota' of 5 nannies in the group at any one time who are able to house a worker in need.

You can sign up to be on this rota if you have a spare sofa or bedroom and would like to support.

Please note: Emergency Aid is the one working group which is entirely reliant on donations to operate. Our housing, hardship grants, and food parcels are all paid for through the generosity of our supporter. Please consider donating at the link in our header if you are at all able - it makes a huge difference to our members.
